Tungsten wedding bands can easily be removed in emergency situations, though the method most effective does not include “cutting” it off, nor will you be in danger of losing your fingers as many silly rumors circulating on the internet have claimed. The only tool one will need is a standard pair of vice grip style locking pliers, and we will explain exactly how to remove tungsten rings if it they not slide off in the normal fashion. Do not attempt to use standard ring cutters on tungsten rings.
The vise grip locking pliers are simply placed over the tungsten rings and adjusted to clamp lightly around it. Release and adjust the tightener of the vise grips one-third turn to in crease the pressure on the tungsten rings and then clamp again. Repeat until you hear the tungsten rings crack, and then continue clamping in different positions until the tungsten rings break into pieces that will fall away. Take care not to slide or rotate the cracked tungsten rings on the finger. If the tungsten rings contain an inlay of gold, the exposed gold can then be cut or clipped in the usual fashion.
Usually medical situations in which this becomes a necessity include excessive weight gain and hand injuries. When we have seen gold or platinum wedding rings be removed in the past, it is almost always because they have bent out of round or been smashed, making it incredibly uncomfortable and painful for the person wearing the ring. Tungsten rings will never bend. In fact, if you were to drop something very heavy on tungsten rings or slam tungsten rings in the trunk or door of your car, tungsten rings would break before they would bend, and simply fall off your finger. In this case, you would likely be safer wearing tungsten rings than those made with precious metals.
Remember, the safest thing to do is just remove your tungsten rings when you’re lifting weights, rock climbing, or anything of the sort.
